The fibrous material cushioning the Pickl-It components – Dunk’R, Plug’R and airlock – packed inside the Pickl-It container for shipping, is called “wood wool”, “excelsior”, or “pine wool”. Early-American glassware, pottery or china – delicate, breakable items – made their journey from European or Chinese manufacturers, nestled in a bed of wood wool packed into wooden crates and barrels.
Wood wool was also used for centuries as a stuffing for cushions, beds, insulation in walls, dolls and toys. Authentic reproductions, or restoration of antique teddy bears must include wood wool, to be truly considered “authentic”.
A sustainable product, harvested from fast-growing soft-woods, two of which are planted for every one that is removed, Pickl-It customers have repurposed their wood wool in many creative ways:
- Making their own reproduction-style teddy bears and dolls
- Layered on indoor plant surface; helps to retain moisture in the soil, while allowing air through to prevent build-up of mold
- Beds for chickens! They love to play with the strands and use them for nesting material
- Decorative packing material for gift boxes (used by high-end gift-basket shops)
- Add to acrylic paints, providing texture to paintings
